Smederevo sits 45 km east on route 34 along the Danube. The 15th-century fortress - one of Europe's largest medieval structures - stands at the river's edge; stone towers and walls enclose 11 hectares. The drive takes 50 minutes on a two-lane road through Grocka and Kolubara villages. Any small car fits; parking is free beside the fortress. Combine this with a stop at Viminacium archaeological park, 90 km further east, where Roman remains include an amphitheatre and thermae.
Topola lies 80 km south on route 158 through rolling Sumadija hills. The Karadjordjevic royal mausoleum on Oplenac hill contains mosaics copied from Serbian monasteries; the crypt holds white marble tombs. Vineyards - Aleksandrovic, Kovacevic - surround the town; tastings require advance booking. Roads are well-surfaced two-lane asphalt. A compact or economy sedan suits; allow two hours each way, plus two hours on Oplenac and one winery visit.
Avala mountain rises 16 km south of Belgrade centre via Bulevar Oslobodjenja. The Avala Tower - a 205-metre telecommunications mast - offers a viewing platform at 122 metres with panoramas across Belgrade and the Pannonian plain. The Monument to the Unknown Hero, a granite structure from 1938, stands nearby. The road climbs through mixed forest; any car manages the paved ascent. The Ovcar-Kablar gorge cuts through the western Morava valley 150 km south-west of Belgrade. Route 23 threads between cliffs; ten monasteries cling to ledges above the West Morava River. Zlatibor sits 230 km south-west via Cacak and Uzice on routes 21 and 27. The plateau, at 1,000 metres elevation, hosts pine forests, ski slopes in winter and hiking trails in summer.
